Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot #23: Winter Days

From Carly's site:

EMPS #23: WINTER DAYS
It's winter, here in the northern hemisphere, but here in the San Francisco Bay Area, it was 80 degrees yesterday. What's a girl got to do to see some cold weather? Glad you asked. Your assignment for this week is to show me some WINTER DAYS in your neighborhood. Snow, rain, clear, yet icy conditions, bare trees, dead leaves, whatever accurately illustrates a WINTER DAY where you live.

Extra Credit: Show me the current temperature where you live. :)

I know I just posted last week's photo shoot but I need to get caught up with assignments before I go out of town. I don't want to get an incomplete on my report card. So, that means another post later tonight for Karen's weekend assignment.

What do winter days look like here in Chicago? Well, two things came to mind for me right away: Ice and salt. Every car I see looks like it has been covered in a fine ash from a recent volcano explosion. See:

I know it is kind of hard to tell from this photo, but the color of the car is called Ruby Red. It doesn't look like that, does it?

Usually on most houses, especially mine since I forgot to clean the upper level gutters, giant icicles are hanging waiting to spear some unsuspecting squirrel that walks underneath. The have fallen off my roof (no dead animals) but there is still some ice hanging of the edge, just
waiting to fall.

The sky is nice and blue at least!

Oh, today it is 14 degrees right now. It is going to be 39 on Friday. It's sad to get excited about 39 degrees, isn't it?

Now, go to Carly's site and check out the other pictures.

It's mid 70's here. We are expecting some rain this weekend but, I'm looking forward to it. I like cool weather and we so rarely get it. lol

DC: Cool?! 70 is cool? In winter? Are you trying to make me feel bad? :)

By the way, thanks for not pointing out that I spelled Monday wrong in the title. I'm a dork, what can I say?

Our car looked just like yours until noon today, when I finally broke down and moseyed through a car wash. I was nearly blinded by the dazzling sun all afternoon; haven't seen it through the encrusted grit on the windows for months. Mr. Unfocused & I will join you in a Chicago-wide celebration of the radical warmth that's on the way this weekend.

Green-eyed siren: I'm not sure when I'm going to wash the car. I always think it is going to rain or snow the next day.

I won't be around this weekend; I'll be celebrating the warmth in San Diego. I will be thinking of everybody in the Chicago area though.

We don't salt roads here in the Portland, Oregon area when it's snowy -- I don't remember why just now. They put down gravel, though, and that can result in cracked windshields later on if it gets sprayed in full force at you. They try to clean the gravel up afterwards but that's not always successful.

Your temperature sounds mighty cold to me, and I'm glad we don't have temps in the teens during the day on a regular basis because my pipes and pump wouldn't be able to handle it!

Suzanne R: That's funny, just the other day iwas talking to someone at work who lived in Portland and he was talking about the gravel on the roads. Sounds luke it would be tough on the car.

In the teens is not good for anybody, in my opinion. We need some kind of tunnel system to get around in winter. :)

Hi Mike :)

Ruby Red? Really? Wow, I had no idea about the salt! Interesting. I love the ice on the side of the roof, nice angle on that one. Thanks so much for the cool photos, hang in there, spring will be here before you know it!

Always, Carly

That's cold! Great ice photo but the speared squirrel is stuck in my brain. lol We use that salt too but we are in CA so we don't need it like Chicago.
