Weekend Assignment #238: What a Rip Off!

Karen is asking us to tell our stories of things stolen from us. I've had a few things, but nothing comes close to Karen's story of the record store robbery. Yikes.

Weekend Assignment #238: As you can see from the entry below this one, I found out on Thursday morning that someone ripped me off by plagiarizing a poem of mine all over the Web. Tell us of a time you've been ripped off - that is, stolen from or cheated in some way.

My first memory of something being stolen is probably one of the most tragic since it involved Star Wars toys. I remember playing with my friends on our patio; I had my Land Speeder with Luke, Obi-wan and R2-D2 in the back. I think one of my other friends had the Millennium Falcon, but I could be mistaken. As we were playing I was called inside by my mom. I had to go in to wash up so we could go out to dinner, or maybe I was going to the dentist, I'm not sure. So I took my Land Speeder and put it behind the air conditioner and said bye to my friends as I went inside. When I came home it was gone. I looked all over the deck, and I probably cried a little, but it was never found. I've always thought that one of my friends I was playing with took it, but I never confronted him. It still haunts me to this day. Why , oh why did I not bring it in? I could still have it for my son to play with and my dog to steal it so he could chew one of the engines off!

In my adult years we had a CD player stolen out of our car overnight. Remember those removable CD players that you can take with you so people won't steal them? Turns out it is really easy for a thief to steal it if you leave it in the car, too. Keep that in mind. What do you mean they don't make them anymore? What am I going to do with the carrying case that I have for that stereo?

For a while there, in the town I grew up in, there was a rash of bike stealing going on. My sister's was stolen right out of our garage one time. We were pretty sure it was some kids that lived across the street from us. They were bad eggs. Our backyard looked out to an open field that was also conveniently located for them to plant stuff as well. I think we found at least three bikes back there over the course of one summer. Not my sister's though. We were pretty sure they were stealing bikes to ride home, then ditching them there. I wonder if they ever went to jail?

Extra Credit: Is there anything you do differently now because of what happened?

I certainly make sure I lock the doors to the house and car. I don't have a bike right now, but when I get one I'll make sure to lock it up tight.

Have you ever had anything stolen?

I've had so many things stolen through the years. I can't recall anything recently, but I'm sure there's something.

Thieves suck! >:(

DC: Yes they do. When will they learn that crime doesn't pay?

I completely removed your old post for ya.

I didn't think I was going to do this assignment, but your stolen car-CD player reminded me of a car-theft story of my own, so thank you!

And I can just imagine your trauma over the missing Land Speeder :-).

Oh no... I am totally there with you. I had a Michael Knight big wheel (yes, KIT) and it was stolen. Imagine coming home from school w/that big wheel on your mind only for it to be long gone? No child should have to suffer such a thing!

Florinda: Glad I could jog something from your memory. :)

Yes, I miss the Land Speeded. It doesn't help that Star Wars is on right now.

VeRonda: Someone stole your big wheel? That's just cruel! And a Michael Knight one at that.

Thanks for not mentioning that I was the one that left the door unlocked when the CD player was stolen.

And I'm tagging you.

Mike - I feel your pain. Come to think of it, there was also the time someone took my collection of Monkees cards that I left outside. (That's how old I am!)
